Southbourne Bowls Club is a mixed club located in West Sussex
and is one of the few in the County to have an outdoor all
weather green of six rinks available for use all year. The green
officially opens mid April and normally enjoys uninterrupted
play until closure in late September. During the Winter the Club
provides outdoor social bowling with the 'Polar Bears' and
indoor Short Mat bowling as an affiliated Short Mat Bowling
Club.
Although a small club in terms of membership, Southbourne has
enjoyed it's share of County and National successes. Recent
initiatives have been very successful at attracting both
newcomers and experienced bowlers to the club, however,
Southbourne still has plenty of capacity for new members and
would be more than pleased to welcome you should you be looking
for a change or new challenge.
The Bowls Club offers a full range of bowling for both the
competitive and social bowler. These include County and Club
matches, internal competitions and leagues, Friendly fixtures
and Roll-ups.
County and National Competitions.
Individuals may enter the full range of competitions offered
by the County and National governing bodies both outside and on
the Short Mats. The club also enter a selection of the team
events available. These provide competition for the more
experienced bowler and gives opportunity for all players to test
their abilities at the highest level.
West Sussex Bowls League (WSBL).
This expanding league is currently supported by over twenty
clubs from West Sussex. Split into three divisions, it probably
provides the most competitive men's club bowls in the west of
the County. This is a men only league with games played on four
rinks with home and away fixtures during the course of the
season.
Southbourne joined in 2004 and continues to enjoy the
competition provided by the top bowlers in the area. The WSBL
also run a cup competition (P.C. Cup) which compliments the
league season.
Brooks Motors League (BML).
This is a Two Mixed Triples League that the club competes in
with the fixtures usually played alongside an additional
friendly. This provides an ideal introduction to a slightly more
competitive style of play and enables our Ladies section to
participate in a club League.
West Sussex Short Mat League.
During the Winter Season the club compete in the County Short
Mat League which plays to a Two Fours format. The lower
divisions are for clubs in the South West of West Sussex, whilst
the higher divisions are county wide. All players require
registration with the county to play in this competition and
this is arranged via the clubs Short Mat Secretary.
Club Competitions.
A large selection of Men's, Ladies and mixed competitions are
competed for annually both outdoors and on the Short Mats. Most
formats of the game are covered including Singles, Two Wood
Singles, Two and Four wood Pairs and a Pairs League. The club
have also introduced additional competitions that cater for our
more senior bowlers and those new to the game.
Club Friendly Fixtures.
A full outdoor season of friendly fixtures are available for
those members who enjoy a social game of bowls in good company.
These popular fixtures will introduce newer bowlers to the game
as well as take them on their travels to clubs in the
surrounding area.
Winter Bowling (Polar Bears).
Known as the 'Polar Bears' our winter bowlers enjoy regular
get together's during the colder months of the year. Enjoyable
social bowling is the name of the game with an annual dinner to
round of the season before Spring arrives.
Roll-Up Sessions.
Outdoor Roll-Ups are always welcome providing rink space is
available. During the Short Mat Season, Roll-ups are held on
most Tuesday evenings and Sunday afternoons, provided that no
fixture is scheduled.
